Norma Hotaling’s Legacy
Dear Friend,
Four years ago, Global Centurion established the Norma Hotaling Anti-Trafficking Awards, in honor of Norma Hotaling, a survivor of sex trafficking and an inspirational leader to all who work to stop the commercial sexual exploitation of women and children. Norma told her story to help people understand how children are trafficked into prostitution and how women become trapped in a hopeless cycle of violence and exploitation. She described the details of how violent pimps and traffickers held her life hostage from the time she was a child until her mid-thirties when she finally escaped.
Norma founded SAGE in 1992, before most of us had even heard the phrase sex trafficking. It was one of the first safe harbors for those hurt by commercial sexual exploitation. Her earliest innovation was her street outreach and one-stop shop, offering comprehensive sets of services for victims of trafficking. She was also the first to realize the need to address the demand side of sex trafficking in order to stop it and created a series of innovative projects aimed at men and boys.
Since 2010, the Norma Hotaling Awards have recognized twelve outstanding individuals in three areas of anti-trafficking work: (1) survivor-centered service providers; (2) innovative work to curb demand; and (3) policy work addressing systemic change. Through the Awards, we honor and pay tribute to Normas legacy and, at the same time, support and recognize the work of abolitionists who are carrying on her vision. We are proud that these Awards are funded by contributions from advocates and organizations across the United States. Once again this year we are asking you to contribute.
Please help us sustain the Norma Hotaling Awards in 2014. Donations can be made on our website: https://www.globalcenturion.org/normahotalingawards. Checks can also be made out to Global Centurion, earmarked Norma Hotaling Awards and mailed to the address below. Thank you for your support.
